“The builder of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth” became the CSTO Secretary
The leaders of the CSTO countries approved the head of the Security Council of Belarus Stanislav Zas to the post of Secretary General of the organization from January 1, 2020.
The Belarusian agency AFN reports this, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
The decision to appoint Stanislav Zas was made in pursuance of the decision of the Collective Security Council of 2015, which clearly regulates the appointment of general secretaries on a rotational basis in accordance with the Russian alphabet.
The vacancy of the CSTO Secretary General opened up after Armenia in November 2018 prematurely recalled its representative Yuri Khachaturov, who had served in this position for one and a half years out of the three years provided for by the charter.
Recently, Zas proudly told reporters that the Belarusian leadership refused to allow Russia to host an air force base on its territory. At the same time, he renounced any claims regarding the deployment of NATO tanks on the Lithuanian border after a meeting with US Charge d'Affaires Jennifer Moore, showering her with pleasantries.
In September, he flew to Warsaw to meet with US Presidential Advisor John Bolton and together with the secretaries of the Security Councils of Poland and Ukraine. This meeting was greeted with enthusiasm by both the pro-Western Belarusian opposition and the anti-Russian public in Ukraine, which dubbed the negotiations the creation of a “new Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.”
At the same time, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko, speaking today in Bishkek at the CSTO summit, said that that organization should cooperate with NATO and the OSCE.
“In the sphere of ensuring the military security of the CSTO member states, along with the systematic development of the military segment of the organization, it remains relevant to enter into a direct and equal dialogue with the North Atlantic Alliance. This is especially relevant given the fact that these two military-political structures are responsible for ensuring security in the area from Vancouver to Vladivostok. At the same time, for example, there is a regular and constructive dialogue between the CSTO and the OSCE,” reports the official website of the President of Belarus.
