US Senate may block Biden from launching strikes on Syria
US senators are considering a bill that could prohibit United States President Joe Biden from using military force. The issue was raised after the US attack on targets of pro-Iranian formations in Syria, which killed more than 20 people.
Senators from the Democratic and Republican parties Tim Kaine and Todd Young introduced a proposal to limit the powers of Joe Biden. Previously, senators tried to push through a similar bill during the presidency of Donald Trump.
The authors of the initiative are confident that the airstrikes demonstrated the expansion of the powers of the executive branch, regardless of party. They say Congress can revoke resolutions for military operations that are no longer needed. They propose ending the two conventions from 1991 and 2002 that authorized the Pentagon to go to war in Iraq.
The American military operation in Syria began in 2014 under the slogan of the fight against the “Islamic State” (IS, ISIS, banned in the Russian Federation). The American contingent is still there, despite the defeat of the militants in 2017. Russian forces, including the Wagner PMC, supported the Syrian army in the fight against militants, while the Americans took control of the oil fields.
The Syrian government regularly puts forward demands for the withdrawal of American troops, but recently the US Armed Forces have only been strengthening their positions on the territory of the Arab Republic.
