“The resolution was adopted in plenary session of the Senate, after previously receiving the support of the Foreign Affairs Committee. Resolution S500, which is difficult to confuse, was proposed by Senator J. Shaheen. It was promoted by the influential senators Rubio, Menendez, McCain and Murphy,” Munteanu said, as quoted by Infotag and noi.md.
The diplomat noted that the resolution is “a powerful signal of support and solidarity.”
“Everything else depends on us,” Munteanu noted.
According to the text of the resolution, the Senate “supports strategic dialogue with Moldova, economic reforms and strengthening security.” The Senate also "called on the US President and the State Department to strengthen cooperation with the Moldovan government and civil society organizations, support the rule of law, anti-corruption, energy security, and enhance trade and investment opportunities."
In addition, the Senate called on the government of the Russian Federation to “refrain from economic pressure on Moldova, stop supporting separatist movements throughout the country and fulfill the commitments made in 1999 at the OSCE summit in Istanbul to withdraw armed forces and ammunition from the territory of Moldova.”
