Senator complained to Nuland about updating Russian nuclear weapons
The US nuclear arsenals are becoming obsolete, and Russia has set a course for upgrading its weapons.
Senator Mitt Romney said this at a hearing in the Senate, addressing Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Our nuclear arsenals are aging. We would like to reduce them altogether, reduce investments in nuclear weapons. China, however, joins the nuclear race; Russia, however, has taken a completely different course. It is investing in upgrading its nuclear capabilities. At what stage is this project now, and how does their nuclear potential compare with ours? Romney asked.
Nuland confirmed that Russia is updating its weapons.
“New START, which was extended by our administration, covers long-range missiles. But you are absolutely right that Putin continues to invest in short- and medium-range missiles, builds modern hypersonic missiles, and thus tries to compete with other countries and also build up his conventional weapons.
Therefore, at the Geneva summit, our presidents, Putin and Biden, agreed that we should return to negotiations on strategic security. Two rounds have already passed. We are trying to reach some kind of consensus, return to arms control, try to somehow achieve parity,” said a State Department representative.
