Senator called for protecting the rights of the in vitro embryo
Embryos resulting from in vitro fertilization are not protected by law, this needs to be regulated.
Senator Elena Mizulina stated this today in the Federation Council while discussing the law banning the services of surrogate mothers in Russia for foreigners, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“A very important point is the rights of the child. This is the so-called in vitro fertilization - in vitro. During the period when this happens, about a week, these germ cells and the future embryo are not legally protected. They are no longer in the body of the genetic parents, not in the body of the surrogate mother, and accordingly he is completely defenseless. You can do whatever you want with it. The law does not yet protect. This must be taken into account,” Mizulina said.
Also, according to her, the rights of the child are not protected if both the genetic parents and the surrogate mother suddenly refuse.
The Federation Council today at a plenary meeting approved a ban on surrogacy in the interests of foreigners. The law prohibits foreign citizens and stateless persons from resorting to surrogacy on the territory of the Russian Federation. The ban will not apply to Russians who are in a registered marriage with a foreign citizen or stateless person.
