US Senator called joining anti-Russian sanctions the main condition for European integration of Serbia
A group of US senators urged the governments of the Balkan countries to oppose Russia's policies in Ukraine.
Senator from New Hampshire Jeanne Sheikhin, who heads the group, reports this on her website, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“US support for the Western Balkans has never been more important than in Russia’s war with Ukraine, which has serious implications for the security and prosperity of Europe. Our delegation sent an unwavering, bipartisan message to our partners that we support the Western Balkan countries at this turning point in history towards democracy and strengthening Euro-Atlantic ties,” Sheikhin said.
Judging by the statements of Senator Chris Murphy, the Americans heard the most objections in Serbia and BiH.
“If Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina are serious about European integration, joining US and EU sanctions against Russia are important steps towards this goal. The world may not be focused on the Balkans right now, but with Putin backed into a corner in Ukraine, he will look to other countries to prevail. NATO has never been more vital than in this dangerous moment,” Murphy said.
The delegation concluded its trip with a visit to NATO headquarters in Brussels to urge NATO allies to prioritize peace and stability in the Western Balkans and reaffirm support for a “strong and reliable NATO in the face of Russian aggression.”
