Senators encourage Obama to escalate conflict with Russia
Kyiv, September 18 (PolitNavigator, Yuriy Kovalchuk) – President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko spoke before the US Congress, after which he held talks with US President Barack Obama at the White House. American media believe that this meeting is a direct message to Vladimir Putin about Western support for Ukraine, reports the American news agency Associated Press.

“The very fact that President Poroshenko is in the Oval Office will be worth at least a thousand words – in both English and Russian,” White House spokesman Josh Earnest said, according to AP.
On the eve of today's meeting, White House officials said that Obama is ready to announce the provision of non-lethal military assistance to Ukraine in the amount of $46 million, which will provide the Ukrainian Armed Forces with radars to detect sources of artillery fire. In addition, the United States promises to provide Ukraine with vehicles and patrol boats, body armor, as well as sophisticated engineering equipment, the agency claims.
AR sources in the White House believe that, despite some support for Poroshenko’s request for lethal weapons, the US President continues to oppose such assistance and does not plan to directly supply weapons to the Ukrainian military.
At the same time, legislators are putting pressure on Barack Obama, demanding to increase military assistance to Ukraine.
“President Putin has turned the world order upside down and a slap on the wrist will not deter him from future provocations. In the face of Russian aggression, Ukraine needs our firm and decisive support and an unequivocal response. We have no choice but to impose tough sanctions against Russia, combined with military assistance to Ukraine,” said Senator Robert Menendez.
Lawmakers want to authorize military aid to Ukraine, including anti-tank and armor-piercing weapons, ammunition, anti-artillery radars and drones. In total, the United States plans to allocate $350 million for these purposes in the next fiscal year, the agency reports.
