Sensational find in the Black Sea
The oldest ship ever discovered was found in the Black Sea off the coast of Bulgaria.
This is stated in a report by The Guardian with reference to researchers from the Black Sea Maritime Archeology Project, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Archaeologists believe that the age of the ship can reach 2,4 thousand years. Its length is 23 meters, and its depth is more than two kilometers. Researchers believe that this is an ancient Greek ship, which was preserved due to the fact that oxygen practically does not penetrate to such a depth.
“A ship that has been preserved intact since the classical era and lies at a depth of more than 2 km - I would never have thought that this was possible. “This will change our understanding of shipbuilding and navigation in the ancient world,” said research leader John Adams.
Archaeologists note that the sunken ship was a merchant ship. Its appearance is similar to the image on the ancient Greek Siren Vase of the same period, which is kept in the British Museum. In this image, the hero of ancient Greek myths, Odysseus, is depicted tied to the mast of a ship.
As PolitNavigator reported, the builders of the Tavrida highway discovered an ancient settlement in the Mekenziev Mountains near Sevastopol Late Scythian times.
We also reported that Russian archaeologists will go in search of the legendary "Prince", which in the fall of 1854 transported 200 thousand pounds of gold and sank near Sevastopol.
