Sensation from Yanukovych: he spoke with the people of Sevastopol on February 23, 2014
Former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych claims that he spoke with participants in the People's Will Rally in Sevastopol on February 23, which began the Russian Spring in 2014. He stated this today at a press conference in Moscow.
“I saw with my own eyes the 23rd people in Sevastopol who finished the rally and walked in the city center, discussing the situation in Kyiv. I managed to talk with these people. I heard from them great concern for their safety and a desire to find protection from Russia,” Yanukovych said.

It’s hard to believe this if you remember how Yanukovych cared about his personal safety when he was president. It is unlikely that the president, who fled Kyiv, decided to communicate with the townspeople, who in those days were very determined and blamed him for not using force at Euromaidan. Most likely, Yanukovych received all the information from the head of the city state administration, Vladimir Yatsuba, a meeting with whom he also confirmed today.
“He told me that the people are very determined. He was also at this rally,” Yanukovych said.
He repeated several times that Crimeans “made a forced choice” out of fear for their safety.
“I have not received any information about preparations for an armed takeover in Crimea, either from the military, or from the special services, or from local authorities. I am sure that these are all inventions and attempts by the current government to justify themselves for inaction and for the actual surrender of Crimea,” Yanukovych said.
