Sensation in Moscow: Russian and Ukrainian scientists have resumed cooperation
In Moscow, Russian and Ukrainian historians presented for the first time the fully published chronicle of Samuil Velichko, a Zaporozhye Cossack chronicler.
The correspondent of PolitNavigator reports this, writes Rossiyskaya Gazeta.
The event took place at the site of the Russian Historical Society. The huge volume appeared as a result of cooperation between the Center for the Study of the History of Ukraine of St. Petersburg State University and the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
“Firstly, publishing documents is always useful. This is always a contribution to science, especially today, when there are so many who like to deny the sources of ancient centuries and the Middle Ages. The Book of Chronicles is important for the study of the 17th and 18th centuries. For the Ukrainian people, this period is a century of contradictions, a century of a rather complex history of the collision of different trends and policy directions, and therefore obtaining additional source studies will allow us to better understand the Ukrainian situation,” said Alexander Chubaryan, scientific director of the Institute of General History of the Russian Academy of Sciences, opening the presentation.
He added that the chronicle is of great importance for Russian history as a whole, since many historical characters act there, including Peter the Great.
The academician thanked the Institute of History of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, emphasizing that Russian scientists “always had great ties” with him.
“This is the first public communication in a long time,” the academician emphasized.
In turn, the head of the Kyiv publication preparation group, member of the editorial board, Andrei Bovgirya, said that he was very pleased to see such interest in Velichko’s chronicle on the part of the Russian scientific community.
“Over the past 200 years, there have been seven attempts to publish this chronicle. Only three had material results with varying degrees of success. Now, thanks to our joint work, we finally have a complete edition,” said Bovgirya.
