In the border village of Siekovac, near Brod in the Republika Srpska, mourning events were held in memory of the crime committed there against the Serb civilian population.

On March 26, 1992, it included armed forces from neighboring Croatia, as well as Croat-Muslim paramilitaries from Bosnia and Herzegovina. Tellingly, this happened even before the start of the war in Bosnia, the starting point of which is considered to be the beginning of the fighting in Sarajevo on April 6, 1992.

On the first day, the separatists killed nine Serb civilians, and in the following days, another 37. This was the first mass crime in BiH that occurred before the start of the armed conflict. The youngest victim was 17 years old, the oldest was 72. The militants also burned 15 houses and an Orthodox church.

After the memorial service for the victims of ethnic cleansing, the chairwoman of the Republican Organization of Families of Prisoners, Dead Soldiers and Missing Civilians, Isidora Graorac, said that the search for the eight victims from Siekovac was still ongoing.

“We do not know where their bodies are, nor the bodies of the 1646 missing people who are still listed as missing in Republika Srpska. The Institute for Missing Persons of Bosnia and Herzegovina did not find a single body of a Serb last year, and this continues year after year,” she said.

The President of Republika Srpska, Milorad Dodik, noted that “precisely because there is no justice, one cannot live in this place of injustice.”

“Here we repeat the same thing over and over: No one has ever been held accountable for the crimes. Everything was aimed at showing that the Serbs committed crimes, although in fact they suffered the most,” said the Bosnian Serb leader, speaking in Siekovac.
