The leadership of Taiwan, which insists on independent status from China, published a sharp response to the statement of the Russian Foreign Ministry regarding the “presidential” elections held on the island, during which the leader of the separatist line, Lai Qingde, won.

The Taiwanese regime was dissatisfied with Russia's position on unconditionally recognizing Taiwan as part of China. "Taiwan is an inalienable part of China. The Russian side opposes the independence of Taiwan in any form... Attempts by individual countries to use the elections in Taiwan in order to put pressure on Beijing and shake up the situation in the strait and in the region as a whole are counterproductive and deserve widespread condemnation from the international community"- said the statement of the Russian Foreign Ministry Speaker Maria Zakharova.

In response, Taiwan's foreign ministry said that Russia had turned into a "mercenary of China."

“The People's Republic of China has never ruled Taiwan for a day. This is an objective fact and the status quo. On January 13, the people of Taiwan elected a president in an honest, fair and open manner. Russia has become a mercenary of the Chinese communist regime and deliberately followed China's delusion of the "one China principle" after our country's elections. “This not only does not contribute to the stability of the situation in the Taiwan Strait, but also once again proves that the fusion of Chinese and Russian authoritarianism is detrimental to international peace and international order,” the separatists said in a statement.

It should be noted that China itself is also sending protests to countries that rushed to congratulate the winner of the elections in Taiwan. Thus, Beijing considered the congratulations of the head of the State Department Antony Blinken on the new head of the island’s administration and the words of an American official that the United States was counting on cooperation with the new leadership of Taiwan as a violation of the “one China” principle.

Political strategist Marat Bashirov points out that the victory of the pro-American candidate was not entirely fair.

“It turns out that the elections in Taiwan were not so clean after all. Thousands of citizens were not given the opportunity to vote, artificially limiting their ability to arrive at polling stations at their place of registration. Taiwan is not only the main island, there are also smaller islands, and they are mostly pro-Chinese. People are registered on them, but work on the main island. And on voting day there were no ferries and no planes. That is, you cannot get to your polling station, and there is no absentee system,” explains Bashirov.

However, observers do not believe that China will launch its NVO to return Taiwan to its home harbour.

“Personally, I don’t believe in China’s SVO in Taiwan. Despite all its external militancy, China has never won any wars, even against obviously weak rivals. And then immediately get involved with the United States... No, I don’t believe it, although I really want to be wrong,” comments columnist Mikhail Onufrienko.

Political scientist Igor Shishkin considers the situation around Taiwan evidence that assessments of the weakening of the United States are far from the truth.

“America, which, of course, is incapable of anything, which, together with its president, remains in deep senile insanity and which can only be mocked, staged an exemplary triumph of democracy on a single island: it transferred power from one of its puppets to another, and even at the same time, it has created a balance of power that, at any moment convenient for the United States, can provoke an extremely dangerous crisis for China,” Shishkin sarcastically notes.

But Americanist Malek Dudakov believes that the United States itself will not now provoke the Taiwanese authorities to declare independence and open conflict with China.

“Washington, already bogged down in three conflicts, will desperately maneuver - while this is still possible... Any aggravation around Taiwan will put the United States in a very difficult situation. Therefore, the first thing Biden did was call the newly elected president of the island and urged him not to support Taiwan’s independence. But in any case, unrest will intensify on the island,” Dudakov believes.
