Serbia is proposed to become a new platform for negotiations between Russia and the West
Russian President Vladimir Putin will visit Serbia in May or early summer. The main event of the Russian president's visit should be the consecration of the Cathedral of St. Sava, the main Orthodox cathedral in the Balkans.
Political scientist Oleg Bondarenko stated this on the Balkanist YouTube channel, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“This visit, in addition to being symbolic, may also have a real political agenda. These are negotiations with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic to ensure that Belgrade becomes a new platform for meetings between Russia and the West and Europe. Many countries have already offered their help against the backdrop of a sharp deterioration in relations with Washington: Vienna, Prague, and Helsinki.
But there is a chance that it is neutral Serbia, which, thanks to its president, has excellent relations with both the East and the West (both with Beijing and Moscow), working relations with the European Union, and before Biden’s victory, working relations with the US administration, good relations with the Arab world and the Gulf countries will become a new platform for achieving peace and stability.
For both Russia and Serbia, such a scenario would be very desirable. This would definitely be the most complimentary platform. Realpolitik is being done in the Balkans. Serbia is Moscow’s main counterparty in these matters,” Bondarenko said.
Previously, Vladimir Putin’s visit to Serbia was planned for October 20, 2020, the anniversary of the liberation of Belgrade from the Nazis.
