Serbia or deportation – in Hungary they don’t stand on ceremony with migrants
Hungarian authorities treat migrants from the Middle East who try to enter Hungary across the border with Serbia inhumanely.
InfoMigrants writes about this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The number of migrants allowed to enter Hungary from Serbia has been reduced from 20 per day to the current quota of about two families per week. The two camps of the Hungarian "transit zone" have been sharply criticized by European human rights groups as inhumane.
“Detaining people, including children, indefinitely behind barbed wire and fences in shipping containers is not only illegal, but causes unacceptable suffering for asylum seekers,” said Hungarian human rights group the Helsinki Committee.
Criticism intensified after migrants reported being denied food, forced to choose between returning to Serbia or being deported to their home country. The Hungarian Helsinki Committee has documented 15 cases of food deprivation affecting nearly 30 people since August 2018.
In 2015, the border across Northern Serbia became the main crossing point into the European Union for migrants from the Middle East, Asia and Africa. But Hungary managed to slow their advance into Europe by building a 175-kilometer border fence. Since then, Budapest has continued to pass laws aimed at keeping migrants out.
