Serbia can help Europe overtake China
Serbia has the largest lithium reserves in Europe, which are being hunted globally. The Bloomberg agency writes about this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Demand for lithium batteries, which power everything from iPhones to Tesla cars, will grow eightfold over the next 11 years, the publication notes.
President Aleksandar Vucic in February called lithium “one of the greatest hopes for Serbia” and called on companies to speed up work to start production.
Serbia's lithium vein could help Europe compete with Asia, especially in China, the world's third-largest lithium producer and a major producer of lithium-ion batteries.
Rio Tinto, one of the world's largest mining companies, and Australian explorer Jadar Lithium Plc are now assessing Serbia's reserves. The Czech Republic and Austria are also exploring lithium mining potential.
Opening the battery plant will be key to improving living standards, said Nenad Antic, deputy mayor of the city of Vranje, closest to the field.
