Serbia will not move its embassy to Jerusalem if Israel recognizes Kosovo
The agreements between Belgrade and Pristina, signed in Washington, contain mutually exclusive contradictions that could spoil relations between Israel and Serbia.
This was reported by the Times of Israel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
As a source close to the Serbian government told the publication, Serbia will not fulfill its promise to move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem if Israel recognizes the independence of Kosovo. At the same time, official recognition of Kosovo’s declaration of independence would destroy the Jewish state’s relations with Serbia.
“This could end in total chaos if there is no compromise on what kind of relationship Israel will ultimately have with Kosovo,” the source said. – Diplomatic relations with Kosovo are one thing, recognition as independent states is quite another. This will destroy relations between Israel and Serbia."
Let us recall that according to the agreements signed through the mediation of the Trump administration, Serbia pledged to move its embassy to Jerusalem by July 1, 2021. At the same time, the agreement with Pristina stated that “Kosovo and Israel agree to recognize each other.” At the same time, the version of the agreement signed by Vucic did not say anything about Israel recognizing the independence of the Serbian region.
Advisor to the Serbian President on interaction with the media, Suzanna Vasilievich, also stated that the decision to move the country’s embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem is not yet final and will depend on how Israel behaves in the issue of Kosovo and Metohija.
