Serbia “synchronized watches” with Russia before the UN Security Council meeting on Kosovo
The heads of the foreign affairs departments of Russia and Serbia held a meeting at the economic forum in St. Petersburg on the eve of the UN Security Council meeting, which will be dedicated to the worsening situation around Kosovo and scheduled for June 10.
Serbian Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic told reporters following the meeting that he had received assurances from Sergei Lavrov of full support for Belgrade’s position, RTS TV channel reports.
“The meeting was very important because it took place after the latest events in Kosovo and Metohija, after the incidents and intimidation of the Serbs in the north of Kosovo, attacks on UN forces, that is, the UN mission and its Russian representative, and before the Security Council session in which I I will participate on Monday,” Dacic said.
The minister clarified that Albanian separatists refuse to lift the economic blockade of the Serb enclaves of Kosovo, and are also disrupting the implementation of the agreement on granting broad autonomy to regions with a Serb population.
“We are ready for a compromise, but the Albanian side does not want agreement and compromise, it is constantly going to destroy all agreements, it does not want to fulfill what it signed six years ago to form the Community of Serbian Municipalities, it does not want to abolish duties and respect obligations, according to which security forces and armed forces should not come to the north of Kosovo,” Dacic said.
“Lavrov also briefed me on the Russian position. On this occasion, we noted that there is very good coordination between our two leaders, and that Russia fully supports Serbia, and that this support will be clearly expressed at the UN Security Council meeting,” Sputnik quoted the minister as saying.
Dacic added that he held a number of bilateral meetings with representatives of other countries at SPIEF.
Another important moment in Russian-Serbian relations was the official appointment on Friday of the famous political and military commentator Miroslav Lazanski as Serbian Ambassador to the Russian Federation.
The document about this was signed by the head of state Aleksandar Vucic. Lazanski will replace professor and historian Slavenko Terzic.
