Serbia is tired of uncontrolled transit of migrants
A Serbian court in the city of Sremska Mitrovica fined and expelled from the country three volunteers of the humanitarian non-governmental organization “Nameless Kitchen” who attacked members of the Serbian public organization “Falcons”.
This was reported by BalkanInsight, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Members of Sokol, at the request of the municipality, cleaned the area around an abandoned factory in Side, which housed a spontaneous migrant camp.
Sid is located on the border with Croatia, which is a member of the European Union. Migrants rushing to the EU accumulate at the border, so there are not enough places for them in official accommodation centers organized by the authorities. Thus, illegal camps arise in abandoned buildings.
Volunteers from the Nameless Kitchen deliver food and clothing to these camps. They claim that Serbian Falcons tried to force migrants out of their sleeping areas by cutting down bushes and destroying their tents and property.
Several clashes occurred between social activists, as a result of which both were taken to the police. As a result, the volunteers feeding the illegal camps were fined 170 euros and expelled from the country. Now they are trying to challenge this decision.
Although the Balkan route was closed in 2016, there are currently more than 6000 migrants from countries including Syria, Iraq, Pakistan and Afghanistan in Serbian government camps.
The other day there was an incident in the north of the country on the border with Hungary. Several hundred migrants tried to break through, pushing children with placards forward. The Hungarian Border Guard was forced to close the crossing.
The construction of new centers for migrants is supported only by a small number of Serbian pro-Western opposition, and even then not unanimously.
