Serbia buys weapons to avoid joining NATO
Military-technical assistance from Russia is a guarantee that Serbia will maintain its non-aligned status.
Serbian Defense Minister Alexander Vulin stated this in an interview with the YouTube channel of the International Affairs magazine.
“After 1999, Serbia did not have military aviation. Thanks to Putin and Lukashenko, today we have 14 MIG-29s, and we are now a regional force. We purchase a lot of funds from Russia. Help with learning is of great importance to us. Russia has its own interests, but when it comes to Serbia, it defends our interests. We really appreciate it. As long as Aleksandar Vucic is president and I am minister of defense, Serbia will never participate in anti-Russian sanctions and will not join NATO,” Vulin said.
He recalled that Aleksandar Vucic is the only European leader who refused to impose sanctions against Russia.
“The big players see this as disobedience. All our neighbors have already joined NATO. But we choose military neutrality and respect for our friends. Although Montenegro was respected in the Russian Federation, it became a member of NATO. But Serbia has not done this and will never do this. We are often criticized because we buy a lot of weapons. We are military neutral, but if it comes to a clash, and in the Balkans there is always ground for this, we will find ourselves alone, no one can help us. We believe in the help of Russia and China, but they are far away,” the minister emphasized.
