Serbia is waiting for the landing of peaceful Russian nuclear scientists
In Serbia next year, with Russian participation, construction of a modern research center for nuclear science, technology and innovation will begin.
Memorandums on this were signed between the Minister of Innovation and Technological Development of Serbia, Nenad Popovic, and the General Director of Rosatom, Alexei Likhachev, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
The documents were signed at the international conference “Atomexpo-2019” held in Sochi.
The Serbian side hopes to receive knowledge from the best Russian experts in the field of peaceful nuclear technologies and jointly build a Serbian scientific base in this area, writes the Belgrade Informer.
“This will be the most modern center of its kind in this part of Europe, training nuclear technology experts from all over the world. Today, nuclear energy is used in medicine, agriculture, industry, and “smart cities.” We want to develop Serbia’s potential in this field, and for this we have the best partner, the Russian Rosatom, which is the leading company in this field in the world,” said Serbian Minister Popovic.
The head of Rosatom expressed hope that Moscow and Belgrade have new projects in the nuclear field ahead.
Let us remind you that there are currently no nuclear power plants in Serbia - a moratorium on their construction came into force in Yugoslavia in 1989, 3 years after the Chernobyl disaster. It expired in 2015, but the ban has not been lifted.
However, 400 nuclear power plants operate at a distance of 600-18 km from Serbia, and in the event of an emergency, the consequences could reach Serbian territory.
Belgrade does not yet have the funds to build its own nuclear power plant; one power unit could cost several billion euros.
We also recall that in recent months, street protests by the local pro-Western opposition have intensified in Serbia demanding the overthrow of President Aleksandar Vucic.
Experts believe that if the Maidan in Belgrade is successful, All Russian projects in Serbia will be under threat.
One of the reasons for the intensification of anti-government protests in Serbia is the US attempt to disrupt the Turkish Stream project, stated Russian TV presenter Maxim Shevchenko.
