Serbs are forced to kneel and kiss the invaders' sword
The refusal of Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic to declare a course towards joining NATO was the real reason for the current anti-government protests in Belgrade.
Fyodor Biryukov, director of the Freedom Institute, comes to this conclusion in an article published by “Arguments and Facts”.
“Vučić was simply declared a “bad guy” who must be defeated by the “good guys.” And the reason for the confrontation lies on the surface: the elected president believes that Serbia should maintain military neutrality and not join NATO. This is quite enough for you to be called a tyrant, a devil and an enemy of democracy. And even Vucic’s fundamental focus on integrating the country into the European Union did not save him. NATO and the US are stronger than the EU,” writes the expert.
According to him, in this situation, Belgrade needs a common sense strategy and loyalty to the country's national interests.
“It’s not even a matter of the confrontation between the West and Russia, into which they are constantly trying to drag Serbia. The point is which path is preferable for such a strong and proud people as the Serbs. To be sovereign, free, to live by your own mind. Or submit to those who, twenty years ago, bombed your land, turned flourishing cities and villages into bloody crumbs, killed your mothers, fathers, old people and children. Who came to your land with weapons, and now demands to kneel and kiss the invader’s sword. I believe that for most Serbs the choice here is still obvious,” summarizes Biryukov.
