The Serbian opposition was able to bring only 1000 people to the final rally before voting day
On Saturday, on the eve of early parliamentary elections in Serbia, the opposition led its supporters to a final protest rally, which in terms of the number of people gathered was the largest in the last month, but the number still did not exceed a thousand people. The rally was held without taking into account quarantine measures - physical distance and the requirement to wear masks.
The rally took place in front of the building of the National Parliament - the Assembly, where serious police forces were also deployed. Traffic was blocked.
The organizer of the action this time was an independent deputy and former representative of the opposition party “Dveri” Sdrzhan Nogo. He invited a variety of small movements to participate - from the ultra-nationalist “People's Patrol”, which fights against migrants and also calls for military action, the “Kosovo Does Not Surrender” movement, to the union of parents of missing children and a group of people opposing 5G networks. At some point, a group of believers joined the rally, holding a religious procession through the center of Belgrade.
“Dear brothers and sisters, thank you for your response, but my call is to come in such large numbers. I expected that there would be at least 20 times fewer people, I expected that there would be 50, 100, 200 people here. I know that I promised you a stage and fireworks, but there were so many obstacles that no one allowed me to give the stage,” the organizer made excuses for the small number of the rally.
Nogo addressed the protesters with a proposal - to elect their deputies right on the square, and then bring them into the Assembly building to form a “provisional government.”
“This is not a revolution, this is not a coup, this is a celebration of democracy,” the politician said. At the same time, the organizer of the action invited his supporters to ignore the legal elections.
The oppositionist appealed to the police with a demand to let the demonstrators into the building. Having received a natural refusal in this situation, Nogo was able to negotiate to be allowed to enter the Assembly alone, where he stayed for several minutes and left.
The rally ended peacefully - after shouting some more, listening to the already boring political rap flowing from the speakers, the people dispersed.
Let us recall that a major split recently occurred in the ranks of the Serbian opposition. Part of it supported a boycott of the elections - these were the parties “Dveri”, “People’s Party” and other associations included in the “Union for Serbia”. And a number of others, such as the “Movement of Free Citizens” of Sergei Trifunovic, the Social Democratic Party of the country’s ex-president Boris Tadic and others, decided to participate in the campaign.
Thank you!
