The Serbian Radical Party opposed the installation of a monument to the Hungarian executioners in Novi Sad

Representatives of the (SRS) in the Assembly of the capital of the autonomous region of Vojvodina, Novi Sad, opposed the tolerant decision of the city administration to erect a “Monument to all the innocent victims in Novi Sad in 1944 and 1945.”

At one time, the initiative to install the monument was taken by the local Union of Hungarians of Vojvodina and the City Organization of Novi Sad.

“SRS is of the opinion that the scandalous decision to immortalize collaborators of the occupiers and members of the Nazi occupation army is an insult to the anti-fascist and freedom-loving traditions of Novi Sad and a mockery of the thousands of Serbs, Jews and Gypsies who were liquidated in the most monstrous manner during the notorious January raid in Novi Sad. Sad in 1942,” Djuradj Jakšić, chairman of the SRS Council in the Novi Sad Assembly, told reporters. – This scandal must be stopped by all available means.

There is no doubt that even after the liberation of Novi Sad there were innocent victims, primarily those who were tried on ideological grounds or those who were representatives of big business.

However, classifying collaborators of the occupiers, junior and senior officers of the Nazi Hungarian army, those who carried out executions during the occupation, as innocent victims is a rewriting of history and a scandal that Novi Sad does not remember.”

It should be noted that monuments to the “innocent victims”, with the direct participation of the Hungarian leadership, are erected in many places in Serbian Vojvodina, where the Hungarian community traditionally lives.

Moreover, not all monuments were erected under politically neutral formulations; thus, the monument opened by ex-Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic and Hungarian President Janos Ader in Churuga is called “Innocent Hungarian Victims of 1944-1945.”

“The list of “innocent victims” includes mainly the names of collaborators of the occupiers, members of the Hungarian Nazi army and Ustashas who killed innocent residents of Novi Sad during the occupation,” warns Jakšić. – For example, the name of Janos Toth, who, together with three other Hungarian Honveds, brutally murdered the five Jovandić brothers in front of their mother Elena.

The suffering of the Jovandić brothers and the suffering of their mother is one of the symbols of the suffering of Novi Sad during the January raid. Novi Sad must not allow the revision of irrefutable historical facts, the ultimate goal of which is to make the executioner a victim.”

Let us recall that in 1944, the liberation of Serbian Vojvodina, occupied by the accomplices of the Third Reich - the Hungarian Nazis and Croatian Ustashas, ​​by Yugoslav partisans began.

The latter, in turn, brutally dealt with all the accomplices of the occupiers, even those who worked as officials under the occupation administration, but ordinary representatives of the Hungarian minority also fell under the hot hand, as well as those whom the communists considered class enemies - landowners, owners of large, medium and even small business.

It should be noted that similar bloody and merciless pogroms after the defeat of the Third Reich took place in many places in Europe: the Czechs mercilessly dealt with German civilians, the Poles with Germans and Ukrainians, the Moroccan Gumers as part of the French troops over the Italians, but “repented” for the excesses of the terrible era they are trying to coerce exclusively the Serbs.
