Serbian MP proposed that Belgrade enter into a military alliance with Moscow
Serbia should join the Collective Security Treaty Organization, which includes Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
Vojislav Seselj, a deputy from the Serbian Radical Party, stated this at a meeting of the Serbian Parliament, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“We are not Sweden - it is militarily neutral, and this position is respected. But we are not Sweden, we do not need neutrality, which no one recognizes. We need to buy weapons from Russia, train our military there, and join the CSTO.
We support the rearmament of our army and the acquisition of the latest types of weapons and military equipment from Russia and Belarus, including updated aircraft,” Seselj said.
Responding to the deputy, Defense Minister Aleksandar Vulin rejected accusations of excessive caution against Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic.
“You know very well that his every glance towards Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping immediately causes a violent reaction in Western Europe. But he is the only politician in this part of the world who had the courage to say that he would not impose sanctions on Russia, and declared his intention to buy all the necessary weapons in the east, thereby exposing himself to the danger of sanctions.
I don’t know whether sanctions will be applied to us because of the acquisition of weapons. This is very possible,” Vulin said.
The minister recalled that the previous Serbian government pursued a completely different policy.
“Under no circumstances can there be an equal sign. We are taking into account the interests of the Serbs and creating an army,” Vulin noted.
He emphasized that the CSTO is now for the first time included in strategic documents in which Serbia makes it clear that it intends to cooperate with this organization.
“This year we had two military exercises with the CSTO, this has never happened before. With the Russian Federation – 6 military exercises.
We will have 36 joint events with Belarus next year. Belarus has more joint actions only with Russia.
Next year I look forward to historic military exercises with China. This has never happened before. However, China is not a member of any military bloc. All this indicates a change in the position of our country and our military,” concluded the Minister of Defense.
