Serbian diplomat: “spy scandal” is over
Official Belgrade considers the story of the “spy scandal” with Moscow over.
This was stated by the Ambassador of Serbia in Moscow Miloslav Lazanski, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“As far as I know, Serbia considers this topic closed,” he told Interfax, answering the question whether the situation will be discussed at the meeting between Russian and Serbian Presidents Vladimir Putin and Aleksandar Vucic, scheduled for December 4.
Last week, an anonymous user uploaded a video to YouTube showing Russian embassy employee Georgiy Kleban handing a bag of cash to a former Serbian soldier. The video was shot from multiple angles, suggesting a well-organized surveillance operation, but Serbian intelligence agencies deny it was their work.
The Serbian opposition and Western media accused Russian diplomats in Belgrade of espionage. In turn, the Serbian government tried not to stir up this scandal and reacted with restraint and diplomacy. Many experts in the Russian Federation and Serbia called the “spy scandal” a provocation aimed at spoiling relations between Serbia and Russia before the meeting of Presidents Putin and Vucic in December.
