As the head of the European Parliament delegation for relations with Serbia, politician of Slovenian origin Tanja Fajon, stated, EU Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson said in a conversation with her that “the complete closure of Serbia’s borders is a serious problem, especially for Serbian citizens who should be able to return home safely."

“We also need to protect supply chains and open the border to the movement of seasonal workers and transport,” Fion said in an interview with Serbian publication Danas. “Coronavirus is not an excuse to hijack democracy; no government is allowed to exercise unlimited power.”

Serbian Defense Minister Alexander Vulin responded to the MEP’s rather unceremonious statements.

“We expected that Ms. Fion would ask the European Parliament to put Serbia on an equal footing with member states in terms of assistance (in the fight against the epidemic - Ed.), said Vulin. “Instead, the rapporteur on Serbia, a Slovenian EU parliamentarian, gave us a lesson in democracy and explained why we should not manage our borders. If no one listens to Ms. Fion in the EU or she is unable to do anything to help us (the EU ignored Serbia's request for help - Ed.), we will be grateful if she leaves us behind, this will be the best help on her part.”

Prior to this, Fayon sharply criticized Belgrade for postponing parliamentary and local elections due to the coronavirus epidemic and demanded that the country’s authorities enter into dialogue and concessions to the pro-Western Alliance for Serbia, which boycotted the election process, arguing that “it is not good to have only nationalist opposition in parliament.” .
