Serbian minister: “Russia, in a friendly manner, made us a transit country for gas to Europe”
A meeting of the 19th Intergovernmental Serbian-Russian Committee on Trade, Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation took place in Zlatibor, Serbia.
Following the event, it was announced that Russian gas will flow to Serbia as before, at lower prices than for the rest of Europe.
According to a PolitNavigator correspondent, the meeting was chaired by Russian Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Borisov and Minister of Innovation and Technological Development Nenad Popovich. After the bilateral meeting of the delegations, topical issues of the most important areas of bilateral cooperation, such as trade, energy, agriculture, construction and infrastructure, healthcare, defense, innovation and high technology, were discussed at the meeting.
Minister Popović noted that Russia has always been Serbia’s closest friend, and added that this is best seen now, during the largest energy crisis in Europe, when Serbia, thanks to Russia, has become a transit country for gas flowing from Russia to the European Union.
“Now, in these difficult times, when the price of gas has exploded and is 10 or 20 times higher than it was a year or two ago, Russia is with us again,” the Serbian minister noted. – Negotiations on a new long-term agreement between Gazprom and Srbijagas are continuing, and most importantly, Mr. Borisov, a great friend of Serbia, assured me that this winter it will be warm in Serbia, and we are confident that the price will be the same as Russia always gave Serbia preferential treatment.
Russia has shown that it is interested in a sovereign and economically strong Serbia. This is confirmed by the fact that our country is the only one in Europe producing the Russian Sputnik V vaccine, and also by the fact that we have become a transit country for Russian gas supplied to the European Union.”
Popovic thanked the Russian Federation and President Vladimir Putin for their support to the Republic of Serbia in the Kosovo issue.
“Resolution 1244 (UNSC) and the Constitution of the Republic of Serbia guarantee the preservation of Kosovo within the borders of Serbia. We will firmly adhere to these documents with the support of our Russian partners. Serbia is a military-neutral state that will never become a member of NATO,” Popovic assured.
Russian Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Borisov, in turn, noted that Serbia and Russia maintain dynamic political cooperation and that the meeting was constructive, especially with regard to the development of economic and economic relations between the two countries.
“We managed to resume trade and bring it to pre-pandemic levels. We worked to complete the construction of the gas pipeline and ensure Serbia’s energy security, as well as to open new areas of cooperation that will bring new income to the Republic of Serbia,” noted the Russian guest.
