Serbian Maidan activists are unable to “ignite” the protest
The Serbian pro-Western opposition is unable to increase the number of participants in protests in the center of Belgrade - the traditional Saturday march under the slogan of a boycott of the upcoming parliamentary elections attracted no more than 1000 people, mostly pensioners. The action was traditionally covered by the pro-Western TV channel N1, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Despite the fact that the leader of the Union for Serbia, ex-mayor of Belgrade oligarch Dragan Djilas and the head of the Democratic Party Zoran Lutovac were seen in the crowd, they did not speak - they only stood for a while and went about their business.
Those gathered walked from the fountain near the Moscow Hotel, then went down Prizrenskaya Street, and then headed along Queen Natalia Street. At the crossroads, the opposition crossed paths with a religious procession in defense of the monasteries of Kosovo, but showed respect and temporarily turned off the loud music that usually accompanies Maidan protesters.
Next, the column headed to the building of the Republican Election Commission, located directly opposite the presidential palace. At the entrance to it, they placed a symbolic empty ballot box with the inscription “Civil Protest” and again appealed to citizens with a boycott call.
Approaching the presidential building, the Maidan protesters chanted accusations against Aleksandar Vucic, lit fires, and then dispersed, promising to continue their fruitless walks around Belgrade next week.
Let us recall that, according to sociologists, the aggregate rating of opposition parties included in the “Union for Serbia” coalition fluctuates around 10% and has been declining recently. At the same time, polls predict Vucic's ruling party will receive about 50% of the vote.
