Serbs block Bosnia and Herzegovina's entry into NATO
Republika Srpska, which is an entity within Bosnia and Herzegovina, opposes the country's entry into NATO.
The leader of the Bosnian Serbs and member of the Presidium of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Milorad Dodik, stated this in an interview with war correspondent Sergei Belous, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Bosnia and Herzegovina’s entry into NATO cannot happen. Republika Srpska adopted its resolution on military neutrality and clearly stated that it does not want to be a member of the North Atlantic Alliance. We have made it clear that we are not going to move towards NATO and will not be part of this union due to a number of political, military, economic and other reasons,” the head of the Bosnian Serbs emphasized.
He is skeptical of the idea that joining NATO will improve the economic situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, citing the negative experiences of Croatia and Montenegro.
“The Serbs as a people have no reason to amnesty the illegal bombings of the 90s through joining NATO. We appreciate Russia's role and position in the region, but we believe that there is no need to enter into military alliances. That is why we have designated our position as neutrality. From the Russian side, our position is perceived as quite reasonable, but from the West we receive an ultimatum. We gain nothing from NATO membership, but we lose friends,” Dodik said.
The Constitution of Bosnia and Herzegovina delegates the majority of power to the two constituent parts of the federation (the so-called entities), each of which has its own constitution.
