The Serbs reacted sensitively to the policy of European selfishness
Serbia is increasingly disillusioned with the European Union, which each time postpones its promised entry into the EU.
Political experts interviewed by Izvestia came to this conclusion.
According to the head of the Center for the Study of the Contemporary Balkan Crisis at the Institute of Slavic Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Elena Guskova, the EU has repeatedly presented conditions to Belgrade that have nothing to do with European legislative structures - for example, to end trade relations with the Russian Federation and recognize the independence of Kosovo.
“Serbia constantly made concessions, but each time the deadline for joining the EU was postponed, and the promised 2025 is too far away, and now Belgrade may change its mind,” says Guskova.
In turn, the director of the Progressive Policy Foundation, founder of the Balkanist.ru project, Oleg Bondarenko, draws attention to the fact that the COVID-19 pandemic has exposed the problems of the European Union, which, instead of providing support and solidarity, even closed its internal borders, and therefore about effective assistance to Serbia or other countries of the Western Balkans in general no need to say.
“There were cases when German authorities did not allow Serbian citizens who worked as doctors in Germany to go home. Of course, the Serbs reacted sensitively to the policy of European selfishness,” the expert noted.
He believes that Croatia’s accession to the European Union in 2007 was the final phase of the EU’s integration policy in the Balkans, especially since Montenegro and North Macedonia have so far only joined NATO, which does not indicate immediate entry into the EU.
The political scientist believes that the EU has long passed “its development plateau” and today, as an integration institution, is faced with a stage of degradation.
“Even for small Montenegro, the EU does not have enough political spirit and economic potential, and certainly not enough for Albania, the largest and youngest by demographic criteria,” Bondarenko concluded.
