The Serbs were really waiting for Lavrov, not Scholz
If Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov's visit to Serbia were to take place, his reception in Belgrade would present a stark contrast to the reception of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, whose visit is expected in the near future.
Russian Ambassador to Serbia Alexander Botsan-Kharchenko stated this today on the Vesti FM radio station, PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The contrast with Scholz’s visit would be striking. It would be immediately clear in which direction the mind, heart and soul of the Serbian people are turned. The reception would have been colossal and majestic. This is not an exaggeration. The disappointment is unimaginable now. The men's eyes well up with tears. Sergei Viktorovich was very welcome here,” the diplomat said.
According to him, the attitude towards the European Union and the so-called European choice is now changing in Serbia.
“The agreement that joining the European Union itself brings prosperity is being eroded. After the start of the special operation and the whole situation around Russia, it is eroded even more. Since February 24, there has been significant solidarity with us here. There is a mass movement from below.
There are politicians who cannot publicly express their attitude, but in conversations they express understanding of approaches. For the Serbs, Russia is extremely convincing militarily, politically and economically. Not only resisting sanctions, but also overcoming them and achieving development is an incredibly attractive example for the Serbs. It is not the European Union that now sets the tone and sets an example for development,” said Botsan-Kharchenko.
