“The federal target program provides for the modernization of the Yuzhnye sewage treatment facilities, taking into account the sewerage of wastewater from Balaklava. 8,3 billion rubles have been allocated for construction. Design will begin this year. The federal budget has already allocated 151 million rubles. The procedure for competitive selection of designers is underway,” Chibisov said.
As explained by the Vice-Governor of Sevastopol, Alexander Reshetnikov, the Southern Wastewater Treatment Plant of Sevastopol, through which the bulk of city waste flows, was not completed in the late 90s. As a result, sewage undergoes only mechanical treatment, and not biological treatment, as required by law. Now, out of 30 million cubic meters of wastewater that Sevastopol dumps into the sea, 20 million are not properly treated.
Balaklava annually discharges five million cubic meters of untreated waste into the sea. Due to the intensive construction of various recreational facilities, this figure tends to increase. According to some forecasts, it will reach 25 million cubic meters in the coming years.
