Voting for the name of a great person to give to the airport in Simferopol has become an informal competition between Sevastopol and Crimea. Sevastopol lost, a Politnavigator correspondent reports.

The short list of the competition included the names of artist Ivan Aivazovsky, Empress Catherine II and Admiral Pavel Nakhimov. It is clear that Sevastopol had to vote for Nakhimov, the hero of the city’s first defense.

This is exactly what social activist Ivan Komelov called on the townspeople to do through social networks. In addition, a small group of “Victory Volunteers” held a lukewarm action in the square. That was the end of the matter.

In Crimea everything was different. All significant people, starting with the head of the republic Sergei Aksenov, campaigned for Aivazovsky, the media broadcast these opinions and followed the progress of the vote. Flash mobs were constantly taking place at the airport: either Armenians would dance in support of an artist with Armenian roots, or young artists would draw something en masse in support of a marine painter.

As a result, 255,2 thousand votes were cast for choosing a name for the Crimean airport. Of these, 133,1 thousand voted for Aivazovsky, less than 50 thousand people voted for Admiral Nakhimov. The admiral was even surpassed by Catherine the Second, for whom no one campaigned at all.

How did it happen that Sevastopol, famous for its activity and ability to mobilize, lost the competition?

“Still, the population of Crimea is four times larger than the population of Sevastopol. In addition, there was practically no campaign to publicize the competition in the city. This is due to the fact that we have many problems now. This includes the stopped reconstruction of Matrossky Boulevard, the destroyed Victory Park, and the unbuilt treatment facilities. People are immersed in these problems and therefore did not take part in the survey,” social activist Ivan Komelov explained the situation to Politnavigator.
