Sevastopol introduces direct elections of governor
Moscow - Simferopol, April 2 (PolitNavigator, Mikhail Stamm) - The temporary commission of the legislative assembly of Sevastopol decided to change the city charter to make the election of the governor direct and popular. The changes are supported by both the current governor of Sevastopol, Sergei Menyailo, and the chairman of the legislative assembly, Alexey Chaly. But it is believed that it is more profitable for Menyailo.

The head of the temporary commission of the legislative assembly and the committee on legislative activity created to work on amendments, Viktor Posmetny, said “To Kommersant”, that yesterday at the meeting it was finally decided to introduce a procedure for electing the head of Sevastopol in popular elections. “Direct elections are what voters wanted from us when we went to the Legislative Assembly,” Posmetny said. Also, in the amended charter, the Sevastopol Election Commission will be given the right of legislative initiative.
The head of Sevastopol, Sergei Menyailo, told Kommersant yesterday that his position on the issue of direct elections in the region has not changed: he supports them. “Changes to the charter can be initiated by the governor or a third of the deputies of the legislative assembly,” said the governor’s representative in the legislative assembly, Alexander Svechnikov, who was present at the commission meeting. “The commission decided that it would get eight votes in parliament.”
The newspaper does not provide comments from Chaly, but it is known that now his supporters, who are the majority in the Legislative Assembly, can control the election of the governor, and after the changes they will lose this opportunity.
