Sevastopol scientists fear for the future of their research institutes, which they want to transfer to the Sochi institute
Sevastopol, January 14 (PolitNavigator, Alexander Kononov) – Employees of the Institute of Biology of the South Seas and the Marine Hydrophysical Institute in Sevastopol fear that they may lose their legal status. Institutional teams were notified of the need to apply for employment at the not yet formed Institute of Biomedical Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences as part of the Sochi Institute of Natural-Technical Systems.

Sharing the scientists’ concerns, deputies of the Legislative Assembly of Sevastopol met with them. Thus, Vice Speaker Ekaterina Altabaeva expressed concern about the future of the institutes’ research base, which has been accumulating for more than 100 years.
“It is important for us to understand the legal feasibility of the reorganization of Sevastopol research institutes, as well as the authority and scientific experience of the Sochi institute. It is important for employees and citizens to preserve their own brands with history. This is the face of our city,” Altabaeva said.
In turn, the chairman of the standing commission on the budget, deputy Vyacheslav Aksenov, explained that joining the Sochi division will help quickly solve financial problems, but it is not clear what they are “signing up for” for this money and whether this threatens the loss of the high scientific potential of Sevastopol .
“In such a situation, there is an acute issue of insufficient information to teams about how the reorganization takes place: what people lose and what they gain. But this is not the case – hence the social tension. The government and FANO (Federal Agency of Scientific Organizations - PolitNavigator) did not explain to the institutions how they see the process of changing the status of leading institutions,” noted, in turn, the chairman of the standing commission on legislation to ensure the effectiveness of government, public control and local self-government, Viktor Posmetny.
