“Today we voted for a bright future for our country,” Massimiliano Romeo, the initiator of the resolution, told the publication. – Just as the Crimeans determined their future at the referendum in 2014. By a majority vote, the document confirmed the general opinion of people who do not understand why Italians should experience economic difficulties. Our next step is not only to demand an explanation of the position of official Rome, but also to force the government led by the Prime Minister to change it.”
It is noteworthy that among those who voted “for” were three representatives of the “Democratic Party” of Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, which, according to the authors of the resolution, indicates an emerging split in the ranks of the ruling coalition.
In addition, Paolo Grimoldi, a deputy from the Northern League and head of the party group in Lombardy, noted that virtually the entire industrial north of Italy opposed the official line of Brussels, supported by the Italian government.
“Lombardy is the economically most prosperous region of Italy, as a result of which it suffered more from the trade embargo than others,” Grimoldi emphasized. “The adoption of the resolution by the regional council of Lombardy indicates a change in the political landscape of Italy. It turns out that almost all industrial regions of Italy located in the north are united in opposing the official government line. Together with our colleagues from Veneto and Liguria, we intend to consider this resolution in the Chamber of Deputies.”
In addition to calling for the lifting of sanctions and recognition of Crimea, the document also speaks of “the need to resume dialogue with the Russian Federation in the interests of strengthening international security and in order to more effectively combat terrorism.”
