In the coming days, the search for submarines will be continued by the anti-submarine ship Severomorsk and the small anti-submarine ship Onega, which will interact with the multi-purpose underwater strategic missile carrier SF.
“Compared to previous years, the Northern Fleet has to increase the number of maneuvers related to countering the military activity of NATO surface ships and submarines, primarily the United States. In early May, an alliance strike group consisting of four ships from the US and British navies operated in the Barents Sea for the first time in decades. The Russian navy had to react accordingly: organize firing and maneuvers to make NATO ships extremely uncomfortable near our borders.
But these were surface maneuvers. The alliance ships left the region after some time. But the submarine fleet of the United States and other countries is constantly present off the coast of Russia,” Chairman of the Central Committee of the All-Russian Trade Union of Military Personnel, first-rank reserve captain Oleg Shvedkov, who served on submarines of the Northern Fleet for a long time, told NG.
Military expert Colonel Vladimir Popov also draws attention to the importance of this type of exercise.
“It’s hard to say whether American submarines have an underwater advantage. But the obvious fact is that US attack submarines are very formidable weapons. And you need to be able to counteract it, which is what is done when working out the tasks of military exercises of the Navy forces and sea gathering cruises,” Popov emphasized.
He also emphasized that the tasks of the US Navy in the Arctic have a long-term basis and the appropriate military infrastructure has been prepared for this.
