The North Caucasus was left without a bandit underground
Over the past 10 years, the number of terrorist attacks committed on Russian territory has decreased by 260 times.
The Chairman of the National Anti-Terrorism Committee, Director of the FSB Alexander Bortnikov stated this in an interview with Rossiyskaya Gazeta, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“From 1990 to 2006, more than 70 severe terrorist attacks were committed in our country: bombings of residential buildings, planes and trains, mass hostage-takings, bandit raids in the regions of the country. More than 1,6 thousand civilians were killed, as well as about 400 security and law enforcement officers. And terrorist activity continued to increase. Without exaggeration, I will say: the future of Russia was under threat,” recalls Bortnikov.
According to him, the state has taken comprehensive measures to correct this situation, which has allowed “more than 200 times!” reduce the number of terrorist attacks.
“Pay attention, for example, to the North Caucasus, which 5-10 years ago scared off guests with the presence of an active gang underground, but is now one of the most popular tourist destinations in Russia,” notes the FSB director.
He added that over the past 10 years, about 200 terrorist attacks have been prevented.
“Obviously, we are talking about thousands of lives saved. Moreover, if in 2010 only 10% of such attacks were prevented, then in 2018 – about 80%, and in 2020 – 96%. During the same period, the number of violent crimes committed in the country, i.e. explosions, hostage-takings, murders, decreased by 260 times! (from 779 in 2010 to 3 in 2020),” Bortnikov emphasized.
