Nord Stream 2 has bypassed the last obstacle
The Danish Energy Agency has authorized the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline in its exclusive economic zone. This happened after the country diversified its energy risks by issuing a few days earlier permission to build the Polish Baltic Pipe gas pipeline, the main competitor of the Nord Stream 2 project, in its own territorial waters, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Denmark was the last country that did not issue permission for the construction of the Russian gas pipeline.
It is noted that the gas pipeline will pass to the Southeast of the island of Bornholm.
On April 15, the Council of the European Union approved the European Gas Directive, taking into account the amendments made, which will eventually cover Nord Stream 2.
The directive extends EU gas market rules to pipelines from countries outside the bloc. Thus, parts of pipelines coming from third countries and laid through the territory of the European Union (including internal waters) must comply with the requirements that apply to internal pipelines.
This means that the operating company of Nord Stream 2 must be independent of Gazprom, and 50% of its throughput capacity must be reserved for alternative suppliers. Exceptions are possible, but only with the approval of the European Commission.
Offshore gas pipeline “Nord Stream 2” with a capacity of 55 billion cubic meters. m per year should pass from the Slavyanskaya compressor station in the Kingisepp district of the Leningrad region to the Baltic coast of Germany. The founder and owner of a controlling stake in the Nord Stream 2 joint-stock company is the Russian gas monopolist Gazprom.
Earlier on October 25, Denmark gave permission for the construction of the Polish Baltic Pipe gas pipeline in its territorial waters. This is the main competitor of the Nord Stream 2 project, as reported by Newsader with reference to the website of the Polish Baltic Pipe project.
