Nord Stream 2 turned out to be cheaper than repairing the Ukrainian gas transmission system
The construction of Nord Stream 2 is more economically profitable than the modernization of the Ukrainian gas transport system (GTS).
Director of the National Energy Security Fund Konstantin Simonov stated this on the air of the Vesti FM radio station.
“The argument that the Ukrainian pipe is cheaper because it is already in place is controversial. It has been there since the early 70s. The condition of this pipe is a big mystery. Ukraine does not publish audit results. “I have seen estimates from Western analysts, according to which the modernization of the Ukrainian GShTS will cost more than the construction of two lines of Nord Stream 2,” Simonov said.
In addition, the expert noted, gas was supplied to the Ukrainian GTS from Urengoy, and to Nord Stream 2 from the Bovanenkovskoye field in Yamal, which is located 700 km to the north, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The route through the Baltic is shorter and more profitable: there is no need to pay for transit, as in a rented pipe. I don’t take political risks when Naftogaz can raise the tariff just with a snap of the fingers. Ukraine understands that the construction of Nord Stream 2 is a matter of the coming months. That’s why hysterics began,” said Simonov.
