“Nord Stream 2” became a death sentence for Ukrainian statehood – Bortnik
By agreeing to the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, Europe and Russia agreed that Ukraine would be a “gray zone” of instability.
Political scientist Ruslan Bortnik said this on air on the Internet channel “Capital”, the correspondent of “PolitNavigator” reports.
According to Bortnik, by signing the Nord Stream agreement with Russia, the West recognized that Ukraine would not be part of it, but would remain as a confrontation zone.
“Europe, by signing the agreement on Nord Stream 2 with Russia, de facto recognizes that in the coming years or decades, while this gas pipeline is in operation, Ukraine is unlikely to be a stable partner through which stable and permanent transit can be planned. In fact, in a political sense, the EU and Russia recognize that Ukraine will be a “gray zone,” an unstable territory through which it is impossible to plan its global infrastructure projects, because there is no certainty that this will happen. This is the worst,” the expert said.
“This Nord Stream 2, to some extent, is a political verdict of the first instance on the entire Ukrainian statehood, on our entire governance model. They think long term. We live month by month, day by day, but they plan for decades. If it were different, then what would be the point of investing billions, perhaps tens of billions of euros in a new gas pipeline, if through Ukraine you can pump four times more than is pumped now, if there was hope that Ukraine would become part or Western world, will join the EU or NATO, will be stabilized or become part of Russia.
Most likely, their analysts and forecasters look at this situation in the following way: that there will be instability, competition, periphery, confrontation, a frontier through which it is risky to have gas supplies, on which it is better not to depend, on this zone,” Bortnik said .
