The North Macedonian Maidanists also failed in the second round. Their leader resigned
Following the results of the second round of local elections in North Macedonia last Sunday, the Social Democratic Party of Macedonia (SDSM), which came to power as a result of the local Maidan, lost to the national patriots.
The leader of the pro-Western Maidan activists, Prime Minister Zoran Zaev, resigned.
As a PolitNavigator correspondent reports, the second round of local elections in North Macedonia only worsened the defeat of the pro-Western Social Democratic Party of Macedonia (SDSM). Let us remind you that according to results of In the first round of elections, which took place in mid-October, the national-patriotic party VMRO-DPMNE won in 17 municipalities of the country, the pro-Western SDSM - in nine, and the Albanian party DUI - in three.
Zaev announces his resignation.
Last Sunday, VMRO-DPMNE installed mayors in 20 municipalities, SDSM in seven, DUI in seven. The most revealing was the situation in the capital Skopje, where an independent candidate for mayor, supported by national patriots, Danela Arsovska, received 56,86% of the votes in the second round of elections, while the current mayor and SDSM candidate Petar Silegov received 39,64. XNUMX%.
At the same time, VMRO-DPMNE won a landslide victory in 21 municipalities of the country, and SDSM won only nine.
“On behalf of SDSM and all our people, I congratulate my opponents on their victory in the elections,” Zaev, who had previously sought to remove national patriots and come to power in all possible ways, including rather dubious ones from the point of view of the Constitution, admitted defeat quite easily. – I take responsibility and resign from the post of Prime Minister and Chairman of the SDSM. Congratulations to all progressive citizens fighting for a united North Macedonia. I congratulate all the elected mayors."
However, according to the latest data, Zaev’s resignation request has not yet reached the Macedonian parliament, which is required by procedure. However, it has already become known that the North Macedonian prime minister will not go to Belgrade on November 3 for the meeting of the leaders of the “Open Balkans”; another representative of the country will go there instead; the candidacy has not yet been decided on in Skopje.
“Starting tonight, Macedonia begins to realize our great dream of a new future, hope for every person,” said VMRO DPMNE leader Christian Mickoski following the election results. – Many doubted the possibility of success, but hope won. Macedonia must change, and the change began tonight. Hope overcomes apathy, and its strength will grow with the new future to realize the dream together and harmoniously.”
Let us recall that Zoran Zaev and his Social Democratic Union of Macedonia (SDSM), in alliance with local Albanian parties, came to power as a result of a street Maidan that began in 2015.
The reason for it was the policy of the conservative leadership of Macedonia, which refused to join the sanctions against Russia, refused to make concessions to Greece regarding the name of the country, and to Bulgaria regarding the language (Bulgarians believe that Macedonians speak the Western dialect of the Bulgarian language), and also expressed readiness to take part in the Russian South Stream project.
Mickoski declares victory.
Zaev's street protests were supported by the United States, the EU, as well as George Soros, as a result of which the liberals managed to achieve the resignation of Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski, despite the president's veto, to form a government alone, give serious preferences to the Albanian majority, and then achieve a change in the name of the country.
It should be noted that the steps of Zaev and the team met with massive misunderstanding and indignation of the majority of Macedonians, who held street actions “For a United Macedonia” in all cities of the country, tried to storm the parliament, and also failed the referendum on renaming.
However, the “democratic” leadership responded to the opinion of the majority with repressions against dissidents and high-profile trials.
Zaev managed to achieve the country's entry into NATO, now he is trying to bring it into the EU, but this process is so far hampered by neighboring Bulgaria, which denies North Macedonia a separate national, linguistic, cultural and historical identity from the Bulgarian one.
Moreover, after the return of VMRO-DMNE to power, it can be assumed that, remembering the experience of past years, national conservatives will be afraid to take the country away from the western direction, just as the new government of Montenegro was afraid to do so.
