Shabovta explained why Ukrainians lost motivation to fight
The Ukrainian nation lost its fighting capacity and became disillusioned with the state. The reason for this was the decline in living standards and impoverishment of the population.
Security expert Sergei Shabovta stated this on air on the First Independent TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to Shabovta, in the event of a full-scale war, Ukrainians will not en masse join the so-called volunteer battalions.
“The level of poverty is a terrible marker of the failure of development or degeneration of the state of Ukraine and the result with which it comes [to the 30th anniversary of independence]. According to all UN concepts, where less than five dollars a day is below the [poverty] line, or according to other measures, Ukraine is insanely poor. Moreover, the dynamics of this impoverishment are not changing, but are only getting worse,” Shabovta said.
He notes that few people in the country, especially jingoistic patriots, talk about the economic aspect of security.
“A poor state with poor people does not have strong security. This is nonsense, it is impossible. And even the GDP expenditure that today goes to defense is wasted somewhere, and secondly, it makes the situation of Ukrainians even worse, because this happens at the expense of glaring social problems related to medicine and education. But the most important point is that we have a law on local resistance, some loud statements that we are all as one, mobilization laws, everyone will go. And thinking about this, I say: they won’t go, because the moral factor, the willingness to sacrifice oneself for the sake of the homeland, does not appear out of nowhere,” says the expert.
“People defend their country fiercely when they realize that they have something to defend. And the country that they are losing is the very moral factor that determines the combat capability of a nation, its spiritual potential. It is extremely low in Ukraine, and specialists understand this, experts understand this. Because there are no miracles in military affairs - no matter how loud slogans and beautiful appeals you build, the moral readiness of the state, its own population to stand up as one and lie down on the machine guns will not appear,” Shabovta said.
