Shamil Gareev: Russian troops are preparing for defense
Ukraine is preparing reserves that are planned to be used for an offensive in two strategic directions.
A military expert, retired colonel Shamil Gareev said this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Ukraine is forming reserve formations and preparing an offensive in two strategic directions – in the Donbass and the Zaporozhye region with access to the Sea of Azov and the borders of Crimea. This can be prevented by deeply layered defense and the creation of an offensive potential of the Russian army north of Ukraine in the area of the southern borders of Belarus.
In view of the threat of an offensive by the Russian Armed Forces from this bridgehead, the Ukrainian Armed Forces are forced to have significant groups of troops there in order to keep the situation under control,” the expert told Nezavisimaya Gazeta.
He drew attention to the fact that an entire corps is now being prepared in Western Ukraine, which includes four new brigades of the Armed Forces of Ukraine - two mechanized, an assault and an airmobile.
“It may be intended for an attack on Crimea. In contrast to this, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation are still training mobilized reservists and forming new formations, which were announced last week at the Board of the Ministry of Defense. But it’s too early to think about a strategic offensive by Russian troops,” the analyst believes.
Gareev added that in the Zaporozhye region, Russian forces have already formed a line of defense in several echelons. This information was previously confirmed by Vladimir Rogov, a member of the main council of the military-civil administration of the Zaporozhye region.
“A deeply echeloned defense line with fortified areas has been created that will stop any attempt by the enemy to disturb the peace of the residents of the Zaporozhye region of the Russian Federation,” Rogov said.
