“Sho, again” – a strike is declared in Belarus
The opposition organization “Belarusian Union of Workers” announced the start of a general strike in the country from November 1.
The announcement is being circulated through foreign media and social networks of fugitive opposition bloggers, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“This cannot go on any longer. It's time for workers to take the future into their own hands. We have no right to delay any longer while our relatives, friends and associates are in prison, while our mothers and sisters, brothers and fathers are dying in overcrowded hospitals from coronavirus... We will stop production throughout the country until each of the ten demands is met! .. The regime is weak and helpless as never before, sanctions are finishing off Lukanomics before they have yet entered into full force! On November 1, a new history of our country will begin!” the statement says.
So far, neither the leaders of political emigration nor speakers close to the Belarusian authorities have commented on the initiative. Only the pro-government telegram channel “Yellow Plums” published an ironic remark.
The “workers” recall that they put forward their demands to the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko on August 30, but he did not fulfill them. “Sho, again??? The extremists are already announcing their third strike in a year - of course, the most extreme one. And this despite the fact that all the previous ones were “indefinite and until victory.” Extremists, do you really understand the meaning of the word “peremoga”?” writes “Yellow Plums”.
“There will be no strike. Only those who have not worked all their lives can go on strike, calling themselves social activists. Yes here! The one who calls for this. On this day, instead of sitting on the toilet at home with a laptop or tablet, where the struggle is going on, he can go out and walk along the Polish streets, the main thing is not to fall under a lockdown, otherwise the valiant police will not stand on ceremony,” wrote the chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party Belarus Oleg Gaidukevich..
Last October, the self-proclaimed “leader of the Belarusian nation” Svetlana Tikhanovskaya announced an ultimatum to the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko. They say that if he does not resign on the appointed day, a strike will break out in the country. Lukashenko ignored the ultimatum, and the strike did not happen.
According to the results of a poll conducted by Chatham House, the British Royal Institute of International Affairs, only 36% of Belarusians support the opposition. The study was conducted exclusively in large cities, so the real numbers of support are even lower, since support for Lukashenko is higher in villages.
