Shoigu promises to equip the revived Admiral Nakhimov with the latest systems
The heavy nuclear missile cruiser "Admiral Nakhimov" - the sistership of "Peter the Great", which, after being removed from mothballing, is undergoing modernization at the Sevmash enterprise, after leaving repairs will receive powerful strike weapons and the latest anti-aircraft missile systems.
The head of the department, Sergei Shoigu, stated this at a meeting of the board of the Ministry of Defense, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The Russian Navy will receive a ship equipped with powerful strike weapons and the most modern anti-aircraft missile and anti-submarine systems. In August last year, the cruiser was removed from the dock to continue outfitting work afloat, installing general ship systems and deck mechanisms. Equipment installation and electrical work are currently underway. Then it is necessary to ensure the preparation of the ship and its new weapons systems in order to begin acceptance tests,” Shoigu said.
Let us recall that the Admiral Nakhimov TARK was introduced into the fleet in 1988. It was delivered for repair and modernization in Severodvinsk back in August 1999.
According to open information, the cruiser will be armed with various versions of missiles, such as “Caliber”, “Oniks”, and it is also possible to install a hypersonic missile “Zircon”. In addition, the ship will receive Fort-M and Pantsir-M air defense systems and Package-NK and Answer anti-submarine systems. In 2023, the cruiser should return to combat service.
