A lawyer working in Ukraine, Valentin Rybin, who defends militias and participants in the Russian Spring, told new details of the story of Russian citizen Yevgeny Mefedov, who spent 5 years in a Ukrainian prison for participating in the events of May 2, 2014 in Odessa.
Rybin said this in an interview with the Topinform online channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“After Evgeniy was released, I met him from the pre-trial detention center, we were driving in the car, discussing what would happen next. He needed to be somewhere, so I, naturally, sent Evgeniy, since he is a citizen of the Russian Federation, to the Consulate General of the Russian Federation in Odessa.
Imagine my surprise when we were still in the car, driving from Nikolaev to Odessa, I called the representative of the Consulate General and told him that Evgeniy Mefedov had been released and he needed somewhere to take shelter, somewhere to spend the night, where - to live - my surprise was boundless when I heard on the phone that “we can’t help in any way, we don’t have such an opportunity”!

He turned to the consulate the next day with a request to issue him some document that would identify him, confirm his citizenship and give him the opportunity to somehow exist in Ukraine. Naturally, Evgeniy was denied this request, telling him that the documents would take a long time to prepare. In order for them to be prepared in an expedited manner, it will be 80 euros, for the usual order it will be 30 euros,” said Rybin.
According to the lawyer, Russian officials are not actively protecting their fellow citizens who are subject to repression in Ukraine.
“During the five years that Yevgeny Mefedov was in prison, representatives of the Russian Federation, and directly a representative of the consulate, visited him in the pre-trial detention center a few times. And every time they told him that “they can’t do anything, they can’t help.”
