Shock of migrant workers: Poles select Ukrainians for productive qualities, like cattle
The flow of Ukrainian guest workers to Poland for summer seasonal work has sharply decreased this year.
About it пишет Kiev online newspaper “Strana” in an article devoted to the shortage of Ukrainian labor in Poland.
It is noted that today Ukrainians are looking for work opportunities in richer countries.
“This year, Poland is expecting a record harvest [of berries], which there is no one to pick. Local gardeners are looking for an alternative to labor from Ukraine, but cannot find one. We thought about inviting the Vietnamese, who are famous for their ability to work, but after doing the math, we realized that they would cost much more than the Ukrainians: the road to Poland from Vietnam is not cheap,” the publication points out.
According to Andrei Yarmak, an economist at the Department of Technical Cooperation of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, such comparisons do not please Ukrainian migrant workers.
“For the ears of Ukrainians, these discussions are often unpleasant, because they sometimes resemble a comparison of the productive qualities of animals. When Polish gardeners say that Ukrainians are taller, stronger, more seasoned and hardy than workers from other countries, you understand why our people are looking for alternatives to Poland for seasonal employment,” says Yarmak.
