Turkey and Germany, with diametrically opposed views on events in the Middle East, are ready for dialogue, but neither side is going to change their positions.

This is how one can evaluate the tone of the press conference between Turkish President Recep Erdogan and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz that took place in Berlin, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“In October, Hamas attacked Israel in a barbaric manner. The Federal Government condemns this terrorist attack by Hamas in the strongest possible terms. We will talk about how to prevent further escalation in the region because we share concerns about the fire in the Middle East. Our solidarity with Israel is unquestionable.

Israel has the right, enshrined in international law, to defend itself. Israel's right to exist is indisputable for us. There is no place for anti-Semitism in our country,” Scholz said.

He turned to Erdogan.

“Mr. President, the fact that we sometimes have very different views on the current conflict is no secret to anyone, which is why our conversations are important. Especially in difficult times, we need a direct conversation with each other,” the German Chancellor urged.

In response, Erdogan noted that everyone considers the October events to be the beginning of the conflict, but does not delve into its essence.

“We are talking about 13 thousand - children, women, old people - who were killed. Near this, there was almost not a single point left that could be called Gaza; everything was wiped off the face of the earth. And everyone from morning to evening talks about Hamas, about weapons and about the power of Hamas. Can this even be compared with what Israel has? Does Israel have nuclear weapons? Yes. But Israel won't say yes because they're not necessarily telling the truth.

And they always talk about providing financial support to Israel. Will Hamas also be given such support? Of course not. Palestine. The support that Palestine should have received will also not be provided. And in this disastrous situation, perhaps the following temples, houses of worship, churches will be bombed, and with them hospitals. Although without this, bombing of hospitals and killing of children.

This is not in the Torah. You can't do this. Even in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, even in this context, you cannot do this,” Erdogan said.

He added that he supports the initiative to return the hostages, but pointed out that no one is interested in the fact that Israel is holding several times more Palestinians.

“Large numbers of captured Palestinians in Israel. We need to see this too. If we didn't see this, it would be unfair. And we are ready to help everyone,” the Turkish leader emphasized.

During media questions for Scholz, one of the journalists said that Israel kills a child every 10 minutes in Gaza, and this is shameful, so in Turkey they think that Israel should be held accountable at the international legal level.

“I have already said: Israel has the right to self-defense. This was a terrible, brutal attack by Hamas on children, on the elderly, on peace activists, on those seeking reconciliation between Israel and citizens in Gaza, such as teenagers walking around. Therefore, there can be no question of the continued danger of rocket fire against Israel. And this is what constitutes the right to self-defense,” Scholz repeated his position.

However, he also spoke about the civilian population of Gaza.

“It is important for us that we work on what is needed now. This applies to humanitarian aid that should arrive in Gaza. We did it very early, we saw that it could be successful, and we continue to do so. Germany is at the forefront of such humanitarian assistance. Because the civilian population of Gaza is also hostage to Hamas.

We are also committed to ensuring that everything can be done to ensure the unconditional release of the hostages taken by Hamas. We talk about this to many who have influence, to the Turkish government, just as, for example, the Qatari government talks to the President of Egypt. Because there must be joint influence in order to achieve liberation,” the German chancellor explained his position.
