Sprechenführer: Kyiv, Kharkov and Odessa are the leaders among violators of the language law
Since the beginning of the year, the Language Ombudsman in Ukraine has received more than two thousand complaints about violations of the law on the functioning of the Ukrainian language.
This is stated in an appeal published on the official page on the social network of the Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language of Ukraine Taras Kremin, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
It is noted that about 45% of citizens’ appeals received by the Ombudsman during 2022 concerned violations of Article 30 of the law “on ensuring the functioning of the Ukrainian language as the state language,” which regulates the use of “language” in the field of consumer services.
“In half of the cases, business entities eliminate violations before the completion of state control; for others, a sanction is applied in the form of a warning with a requirement to eliminate violations within 30 days. In case of repeated violation within a year, a fine in the amount of 57 to 5100 UAH will be imposed on such entities in accordance with Article 6800 of the Law,” the message says.
Kremin noted that in conditions of martial law, compliance with the law “on language” should be as high as possible.
“Protecting the right of citizens to freely communicate and receive information and services in the Ukrainian language in all spheres of public life throughout Ukraine is our main task.
In most cases, we have achieved that the violations have been eliminated, and the activities of certain business entities have been brought into compliance with the language law. Therefore, despite the fact that we still continue to record violations, there are more and more Ukrainian ones, including in the service sector,” Kremin emphasized.
The publication also reports that over 9 months of 2022, 2 citizen complaints were registered. The most problematic issue in appeals remains the language of Internet representations of entities that serve citizens – 177%; service directly (offline), information about goods and services – 34,5%.
According to statistics on violations, Kyiv is in the lead, followed by Kharkov and Odessa regions.
